The topic I will be researching is how laws for free blacks changed between 1776 and the beginning of the Civil War. I am using the Library of Congress website, and as of now I have sources on the Slave Code in D.C. and a court case which discusses the writes of slaves and "free colored persons." I am researching this topic because I'd like to focus on the criminal justice aspect of history.
I like your topic choice since it is relevant to us being criminal justice majors. Since we are ciminal justice majors we are constantly being told about the laws in our society today, but what most don't know is the laws that blacks had that whites didn't. I think this is a good topic for you because it's not only something you want to know more about but also it's something that interests you. If you are like me, you tend to write better when it's something that interests you.
This is a great topic. I think it might be helpful to examine how the attitudes of the people in the country affected the laws. Are you comparing the laws to the laws regarding white people or primarily the changes in free colored persons laws?
