Topic: Pearl Harbor attack and the reactions and opinions of the attack. How the opinions and reactions differ throughout the different classes of people.
Collection: Man on the Street Recordings. Dear, Mr. President Recordings.

To Do: Week of 10/13/14
-Find SECONDARY SOURCES!!!
-Write at least 500-700 words a week
-Need to find a question to ask myself for my paper. This is a very hard thing for me to do.
-Come up with a thesis based on the question. (I am very good at researching, just not the whole writing a question and a thesis part...)
-Finish reading and listening through the recordings

Random Thought:
I found some letters that were addressed from Alan Lomax to many individuals discussing the "Man on the Street" and "Dear, Mr. President" recordings. This thoroughly interested me that this Alan Lomax was getting so involved with the people that he was interviewing. ALSO!!! I found the responses to Alan Lomax from those that he did contact by letter. AND! There is a telegram addressing the urgency of having a recording sent to Alan Lomax.

Bibliographies so far:

Questions:
How does class relate to the reactions given in the interviews about the Pearl Harbor attack? Why may class be a key reason why citizens agree or disagree with the actions being taken to overcome this tragedy?

Thesis????
Really having some trouble with coming up with a thesis statement. Need to put more thought into what I need to include in my thesis statement. Suggestions and criticism greatly appreciated.

Excel: Working on how to work the program. I have never actually used it before. Need to label categories of class in correlation to reaction. Job titles?

Recordings: ALMOST DONE!!! I just have a little bit more to go and then that part of my research can be done!

Secondary sources: http://www.globeatwar.com/review/attack-pearl-harbor - book about attack on pearl harbor/ analysis, Japanese point of view
-Maybe find some journals about pearl harbor and reactions/ after

October 17th
-Finished looking over the rest of the recordings and made sure that all of the people that were interviewed had some type of occupation or none at all. By putting the occupations in with my notes this helps me decipher who is in which class.
-On Monday I am working on my thesis statement and hopefully can find enough secondary sources for this topic.
-Need to have a rough rough rough draft by tuesday the 28th so that I can see what I need to work on. Only needs to be 1200 words.
-I have looked at more primary sources besides the recordings.. I have found some written documents relating to the Infamy and address people about the recordings and how they have helped.
-Have made a basis for my excel document, just need to plug in the information

October 21st
-Trying to connect Dr. Mr. President recordings to Roosevelt's letters responding to citizens
-Found almost all of my secondary sources
-Finish excel documents and narrow down recordings to about 20 important ones
-Writing more notes and have started finishing my bibliography
It was a very busy weekend so I didn't get as much done as I was hoping to

November 13th
-state where you got your information from
-"where the source came from" claims that
-have framework in
-there are recordings that show this throughout, the examples are, bring the quotes throughout here.
-stop the repetition
-bombing by Japanese shocked state
-alan lomax (more about him)
-one of the ways we know about the reactions from the people (through the interviews compiled by alan lomax)
-also say this for both of the interviews
-backround on the collections
-best ways we know about the reactions and how to deal with pearl harbor is from the research done the day and months to come after the bombing
-generally speaking:
-if you look at it by social class
-dont mix methodoligy with staements
-analysis
-secondary sources: we all need them
-identify places where you need to get secondary put into the paper
-rewriting the paper

  1. How is listening to all the recordings and taking notes going? Are there any trends you're noticing so far; class, race, gender, location? It sounds like you have a very good handle on what you're looking at. Maybe once you've taken notes on several recordings it would be helpful to organize them by reaction - positive, negative, neutral, and unsure, to make the collection easier to handle?

  2. Is this specifically American reactions and opinions or is it a world wide view your looking for? The more you listen to the more you’ll need to take into account so just stay organized! I could see Reactions and opinions based on race also being very interesting, such as Japanese Americans vs Causation Americans, ect.
