My topic is a part of the Library of Congress primary source collection. I'm planning to write on the establishment of the United States by looking through the journals of the House of Representative and the Senate from 1789 to sometime in the 1800s.

  1. I think that is a very interesting topic, but a big topic. It might be helpful to pick something a little more specific. Maybe the writing of the Constitution or the discussion of the separation from England?

    1. I was planning to write about the separation from England and how we established the government without any help, and completely by us. Thank you!

  2. Liz is right, that's a pretty broad topic. Based on your time period, it looks like you're examining the period immediately after the declaration of independence, which is awesome--I feel like that area of history is probably overlooked. Most people like to look at the events leading up to independence, but not as many people consider the tumult that followed as a young country tried to get on its feet. So I really like that perspective, but what in particular are you examining? Political attitudes? The struggles of the United states to establish itself at home? Or the efforts to be recognized abroad as a sovereign nation? Maybe domestic sociopolitical disputes and the aftermath of revolution? There are a lot of different routes you could take with this and I think any of them would be good, but it probably needs to be narrowed down before you can really take off.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you decide to move forward! Best of luck!
